Independent science is a myth without legal protection for scientists
Arpad Pusztai spent most of his career at the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen. He is considered the world's foremost expert on plant lectins, and is the author of 270 papers and three books on the subject.
In 1998 Pusztai publicly announced on broadcast television that the results of his research demonstrated eating Genetically Modified potato caused harm to rats - they damaged the gut, other organs and their immune systems. Although the GM potatoes resisted aphids, beneficial insects were also harmed. This revelation led to his dismissal from the institute. The resulting controversy over the dismissal and the validity of his research conclusions became known as The Pusztai Affair.
On 10 October1998, the day that the whistle-blowing documentary was due to be broadcast, the Rowett Institute received two phone calls from 10 Downing Street. According to Professor Robert Orskov OBE, who worked at the Rowett for 33 years and is one of Britain's leading nutrition experts, the phone calls went from Monsanto to Bill Clinton, and then to Tony Blair, and then to Rowett Director Philip James. Nothing could be done to stop the transmission - the publicity brought home to people that they were guinea pigs in a gigantic GM experiment.
Phone calls to Arpad’s office were diverted. He was subsequently suspended and legally gagged, along with his wife and colleague Susan Bardocz (also a speaker at AVII). His data was confiscated and his team disbanded.
Government scientists must sign contracts forbidding them disclosing data without their Director’s permission (even after retirement!). Arpad could not defend himself. He was threatened by Court action to recoup any “financial damages” if he spoke out. Without legal protection he lost his job, earnings, and privacy (he was subjected to telephone-wire-tapping and e-mail monitoring). He also developed stress-related illnesses. He was deprived of his human right of self-defence, and isolated from science and society.
But now, Arpad removes the gag, and tells you what has really being going on with Genetically Modified food. It will make you understand why the EU establishing a committee, to promote the acceptance of GM food, shows that the evidence in favour is so easy to discredit.
For society the information flow has been blocked, depriving people of the right to influence their future. The objective was manipulating public opinion, jeopardizing public health, and society has lost the right to call wrongdoers to account. The final conclusion is that we need to remind our peers and politicians that any democratic society that does not protect its scientists, and suppresses academic freedom, ultimately stifles its own development.
Arpad Pusztai PhD was born and educated in Hungary. As a young chemist he left the Country in 1956, and with a Ford Fellowship achieved his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of London.
He worked as a post-doc at the Lister Institute for several years before the Nobel Laureate Dick Synge invited Dr Pusztai to work with him at the prestigious Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, Scotland from 1968.
His main research interest was the interaction of biologically active compounds, such as lectins, enzymes, enzyme inhibitors, probiotics, etc, with the gut.
He started to work on the safety of GM plants in 1995. After his retirement from the institute, he carried on lecturing all over the world. He has also been teaching in his native country Hungary at St Stephen University at Godollo and also in Tromso, Norway.
He has had published over 300 refereed scientific papers and is the author of several scientific books.
In 2005, he received the Whistleblower Award from the German Section of the International Association of Lawyers against Nuclear Arms (IALANA) and the Federation of German Scientists (VDW).
