Professor David Bellamy OBE

Challenging Orthodoxy... a career limiting move!
“When I first stuck my head above the parapet to say I didn't believe what we were being told about global warming, I had no idea what the consequences would be. I am a scientist and I have to follow the directions of science, but when I see that the truth is being covered up I have to voice my opinions…
“I’m still an environmentalist, I’m still a Green and I’m still campaigning to stop the destruction of the biodiversity of the world. But money will be wasted on trying to solve this global warming ‘problem’ that I would much rather was used for looking after the people of the world.”
David Bellamy, Daily Express, 5 November 2008
A respected botanist and the author of 45 books, David has presented over 400 television shows across the years, and was much appreciated by audiences for his boundless enthusiasm. However, for the last ten years he has been axed from our screens, ignored by series commissioners at the BBC where he made his name, as well as by fellow scientists and environmentalists.
His crimes? He began by expressing his criticism of wind farms on an episode of children’s television series Blue Peter in 1996.
Since then, he has also described the belief that global warming is man-made as “poppycock”. Almost daily, we all see and hear the official dogma trotted out; “The debate is over. There is consensus amongst the scientific community that climate change is anthropomorphic.”… But is there?
In his presentation, Professor David Bellamy will detail why this is not the case, and wonder why criticising the science of man-made global warming is seen as such a bad thing. Are we dealing with hard science or hard politics in the stifling of discussion?

Botanist, author, broadcaster, and environmental campaigner David Bellamy was born in London, England. He trained as a botanist at Durham University, where he later held the post of Senior Lecturer in Botany until 1982, and still holds the post of Honorary Professor for Adult and Continuing Education. He was made Special Professor of Botany at the University of Nottingham in 1987.
He first came to public prominence as an environmental consultant at the time of the 1967 Torrey Canyon disaster.
His first appearance on television was in 1970, with Life in Our Sea. Other television series and specials include Bellamy on Botany (1973), Bellamy's Britain (1975), Bellamy's Europe (1977), Botanic Man (1978), Up a Gum Tree (1980), Bellamy’s Backyard Safari (1981), The Great Seasons (1982), Bellamy’s New World (1983), End of the Rainbow Show (1986), SWALLOW (1986), Turning The Tide (1986), Bellamy's Bugle (1986–88), Bellamy on Top of the World (1987), Bellamy’s Journey to the Centre of the World (1987), Bellamy’s Bird’s Eye View (1989), Wheat Today What Tomorrow (1989), Moa’s Ark (1990), Bellamy Rides Again (1992), Routes of Wisdom (1993), Blooming Bellamy (1993-94), The Peak (1994), Bellamy's Border Raids (1996), Westwatch (1997), A Welsh Herbal (1998), Salt Solutions (1999) and The Challenge (1999).
In 1983, he was jailed for blockading the Australian Franklin River in a protest against a proposed dam.
On 18 August 1984 he leapt from the pier at St Abbs Harbour into the North Sea. In the process he officially opened Britain's first Voluntary Marine Reserve, the St Abbs and Eyemouth VMR.
In 1997 he stood against the incumbent Prime Minister John Major for the Referendum Party.
In October 2006 David joined the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition, a group of scientists trying to refute what they believe are unfounded claims about man-made global warming, In May 2007 Bellamy and Jack Barrett jointly authored a paper in the refereed Civil Engineering journal of the Institution of Civil Engineers entitled “Climate stability: an inconvenient proof”. In this report they argue that the widely prophesied doubling of carbon dioxide levels from natural, pre-industrial levels was not only unlikely but would also amount to less than 1 degree C of global warming.
In June 2007, The New Zealand Centre for Policy Research published an opinion piece by Bellamy stating amongst other things that “There are no facts linking the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide with imminent catastrophic global warming”.
He is the originator, along with David Shreeve and the Conservation Foundation (which he also founded), of the Ford European Conservation Awards. In February 2009, he was due to be master of ceremonies at the Rosenblatt New Energy Awards at the Natural History Museum. However, due to the fact that wind companies were shortlisted, David decided it would not be appropriate for him to continue as host.
